At least 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
